PFI USA Inc. · Established 1959
Our Story
From Polish tradition to the American market-a story of courage, friendship, family, and flavors that connect generations.
Where it began
An idea rooted in heritage
The story of Polish Folklore Import Co., Inc., now doing business as PFI USA Inc., began with an idea from Kazimierz Stawski-a Polish patriot from Stęszew, near Poznań, and a participant in the victorious Greater Poland Uprising.
He encouraged his son, Stanisław Stawski, and Stanisław’s friend, John Mielski, to establish a company in the United States that would import products from Poland. Those products would remind Polish immigrants-including veterans of both World Wars-of their homeland, traditions, and family roots.
The company began with Polish folk art and traditional handicrafts. In time, its work expanded to a broad range of Polish food products.
Our journey
Lives shaped by history
Two Polish immigrants, one shared vision, and a company built to keep Polish heritage alive in America.

The beginning of Polish Folklore Import
Polish Folklore Import was founded in early 1959 by John Mielski and Stanley Stawski-two Polish immigrants whose lives had been profoundly shaped by World War II.
John was born near Lviv. Fleeing first from the Germans and later from the Soviets, he eventually reached Haren, Germany. On May 19, 1945, the city was occupied by the 1st Polish Armored Division under General Stanisław Maczek. On June 4, 1945, General Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski gave it a new name-Maczków. Approximately 5,000 Poles settled there, including former prisoners of concentration camps and prisoner-of-war camps, as well as forced laborers.
It was from Maczków that John emigrated to the United States. He became an American citizen in 1956. Before entering business, he worked as a draftsman in downtown Chicago and supplemented his income by selling heating and cooling equipment.
John passed away in 2006, leaving the company to his wife, Bogumila, and her nephew, Christopher Bogacz. Christopher is the grandson of Second Lieutenant Bronisław Bogacz, code name “Biały,” an officer of the Polish Home Army in Poznań who was executed at the Żabikowo camp near Poznań on August 20, 1944.

Stanley Stawski’s road to America
After being forcibly displaced with his family in 1941, Stanisław “Stanley” Stawski arrived in Warsaw and joined the Polish Home Army the following year. Not yet 20 when the Warsaw Uprising began, he fought under the code name “Kazik.”
After 63 days of fighting, he was sent through Ożarów to the prisoner-of-war camp in Murnau. Liberated by American forces, he joined the Polish II Corps under General Władysław Anders.
Stanley crossed the Atlantic aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth and arrived at Ellis Island. His journey eventually led to Chicago, where he met John Mielski. After two years of jointly operating Polish Folklore Import, Stanley founded Stanley Stawski Distributing, specializing in alcoholic beverages from Poland and other countries.
On August 20, 2026, Stanley Stawski celebrated his 102nd birthday.

Bringing Polish brands to America
Polish Folklore Import played an important role in introducing well-known Polish foods to the American market, including fruit and vegetable preserves, confectionery, mineral waters, and beverages.
Over the years, its portfolio included Krakus, Polonaise, Bałtyk, Agrofruct, Wedel, Wawel, Kopernik, Olza, Goplana, Śnieżka, Mieszko, Jutrzenka, Nałęczowianka, Kryniczanka, and Wielkopolanka.
Polish Folklore Import and Stanley Stawski Distributing are among the oldest Polish-rooted companies in the United States whose work was connected from the beginning with importing products from Poland.

An artistic tribute to the categories and traditions behind PFI’s brands.
The birth of Polonaise
John Mielski began working with Ludwik Mastalerz, one of Poland’s first private producers of preserved vegetables. Together, they created the Polonaise brand, offering pickled and brined cucumbers, sauerkraut, beets with horseradish, and prepared horseradish.
Years of cooperation, mutual trust, and friendship allowed Polonaise to grow and establish a lasting presence in America. During the same period, PFI introduced additional private-label brands including Bałtyk, Shkvarka, Polish Kluski, and Happy Farm.
These are among the many brands for which PFI completed initial U.S. Food and Drug Administration registrations and pioneered importation and distribution in the United States.
“Bringing the flavors, products, and traditions of Poland to America since 1959.”
Our mission then. Our mission today.
Milestones
A legacy still being written
A tradition that continues
Rooted in Poland. Built in America.
It is a story built on courage, patriotism, family values, and friendship-the story of people who began new lives in America after the hardships of war without ever forgetting their Polish heritage.
Our quiet dream is to one day reach the 100-year milestone-just as one of the company’s pioneers, Captain Stanley Stawski, has done in his own remarkable life.

Nasza historia

Uciekając najpierw przed Niemcami, a później przed Sowietami, dotarł do Haren w Niemczech.
To właśnie z Maczkowa John wyemigrował do Stanów Zjednoczonych.

Droga Stanleya Stawskiego do Ameryki
20 sierpnia 2026 roku Stanley Stawski obchodził swoje 102. urodziny.

Polskie marki w Ameryce
